A Journey from Victim to Survivor…to Living Freely

Lyrical Wisdom

I think and speak in lyrics.  I feel in melody.  I dream in color.  It’s music that carries me through my ability to parent, to be a friend, to fight and survive and thrive, to breathe…it’s music.  There are too many songs and lyrical pieces that make up the soundtrack in my mind to put into print, but I thought I’d begin to make a compilation of some favorite lines…so that you might find comfort and respite in them…even if for a moment.

Andrew McMahon, across his bands’ names (Something Corporate, Jack’s Mannequin, Andrew McMahon in the Wilderness), appears often…I feel he’s a lyrical and poetic genius…and his music has carried me when I couldn’t stand on my own two feet…I met him recently and, with tears in my eyes, I thanked him…for his beautiful words and his role in my healing…it makes my heart happy that I could personally thank him after a decade of him keeping me afloat. “Swim for the music that saves you when you’re not so sure you’ll survive” (AM, Swim) ❤

“Sometimes perfection can be…perfect Hell…” ~Jack’s Mannequin “Bruised”

“So much of me is made of what I’ve learned from you…You’ll be with me–Like a hand print on my heart…Who can say that I’ve been changed for the better?  Because I knew you…I have been changed for good.” ~Wicked “For Good”

“It’s going to be a hard day…don’t panic, don’t panic” -Jack’s Mannequin “Rescued”

“Let it go, let it roll right off your shoulder…Don’t you know the hardest part is over?…Let it in, let your clarity define you…In the end we will only just remember how it feels.” ~Rob Thomas “Little Wonders”

“Give me something to believe in…a breath from the breathing. ‘Cause lately I’m not dreaming, so what’s the point in sleeping?  It’s just that at night I’ve got nowhere to hide.” ~Jack’s Mannequin “Hammers and Strings”

“There are days of taking more than I can give.  And there are choices that I’ve made that I wouldn’t make again.  I’ve had my share of laughter, of tears and troubled times.  This has been the story of my life.  I have won…and I have lost.  I got it right sometimes, but sometimes I did not.  Life’s been a journey…I’ve seen joy, I’ve seen regret. (Oh, and you have been my God through all of it)” -Colton Dixon “Through All of It”

“Say what you want to say, Let your words ring out, All I say–Let me see you be brave!” ~Sara Bareilles

“This world can be ugly…But isn’t it beautiful?  And, Katie…Katie, I’m sorry that in your condition the sunshine’s been missing…(But, Katie) Don’t believe that it isn’t there.” ~Jack’s Mannequin “There, There Katie”

“I’m not crazy, I’m just a little unwell…I know right now you can’t tell…But stay a while and maybe you see another side of me.” ~Matchbox Twenty “Unwell”

“Oh my God…this hurts like hell.  (Tell me dr how to shake) a waking nightmare that is only worse when I am sleeping” ~Jack’s Mannequin “Kill the Messenger”

“You see everything.  You see every part.  You see all my light and you love my dark.  You dig everything of which ashamed.  There’s not anything to which you can’t relate” ~Alanis Morissette “Everything”
